Christmas Reading

Christmas is on December 25th, and it is a holiday celebrated around the world. It commemorates the birth of Jesus Christ, but today it is celebrated by many non-Christians. The religious celebrations of Christmas honour the birth of Jesus Christ. Many of the Christmas songs and stories are about the birth of Jesus. The story says he was born in a manger (barn) beside the animals. The Nativity Scene is a representation of this event. A few weeks after his birth, Jesus was visited by the Three Kings, who brought him gifts. These Three Kings are honoured in many countries on January 6th. Because of the religious meaning of Christmas, Christians attend church services on December 24th and 25th. One famous event is Midnight Mass, a religious ceremony for Catholics on December 24th at midnight. Christmas is also celebrated by many people who are not Christian. Secular traditions include Santa Claus, decorations, and Christmas trees. Santa Claus is a man who brings gifts and toys to the children of the world on Christmas Day. He is also known as Father Christmas, Saint Nicholas, and Santa. He wears a red suit and has a long white beard. He flies around the world in a sleigh led by 8 reindeer. The reindeer are also very famous, the most popular being Rudolph. Santa's toys are made by elves in the North Pole. On Christmas, many people decorate their homes with lights and a Christmas tree. The tree is where Santa leaves the gifts on Christmas morning. Another decoration is the Christmas stocking. This is a large sock that Santa leaves gifts inside. Many people like to decorate their homes with Christmas lights. Often, these lights are on for the whole month of December. There are many Christmas songs and movies. Some of the most famous are the Grinch Who Stole Christmas, Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer, and The Christmas Story. Although there are many traditional songs and stories, new Christmas movies and music are made each year.
